Recognition has a unique way of reminding us that our actions matter. It feels great to know that our effort, kindness and positive attitude can make a difference. Staff can be recognized through Stand Out for Good program, and now Sioux Falls Loving School students have a chance to earn special recognition, too.

In October, Loving School launched a new program called Student of Hope. The program allows CHS staff to nominate a student who inspires others through the hope they carry, their determination to succeed and their refusal to give up.

The idea came to life when Loving School Principal Ericka Bohle shared with staff her vision to start a student-of-the-month program to encourage and recognize students who go above and beyond.

“Our kids work incredibly hard academically, socially and emotionally,” said Ericka. “We wanted a way to celebrate their resilience, courage and growth. Hope isn’t just a feeling here—it’s something our kids practice every day.”

Staff responded positively, and Teacher Assistant Paige Knuth suggested incorporating the Science of Hope to make the program more meaningful. From there, Student of Hope was born.

Teachers, therapists, residential youth counselors, and facilities and admin staff can now fill out a form to nominate any child on the SFCH campus. Each month, staff select two recipients, and the students’ photos are displayed in the school lobby.

This month, both students were recognized for their remarkable personal growth and the positive ways they have shown up in school.

Middle schooler Suryianna earned recognition for her significant progress in managing strong emotions and responding to challenges with confidence and courage. She consistently demonstrates healthy coping skills, strong communication during tough moments and pride in her growth. Way to go, Suryianna!

First grader Jett also received a Student of Hope award for October. He was chosen for being a great friend and helper in the classroom. Jett shows patience, empathy and a calm presence throughout the school day and continues to serve as a positive role model to his peers.

“Hope grows when we recognize effort, celebrate progress and remind kids that the work they’re doing is important,” said Ericka. “Programs like Student of Hope reinforce the belief that our kids are capable, valued and not alone on their journey.”
